The drought during the entire vegetative cycle has reduced the production in Bodegas Nexus & Frontaura, a difficult year in which the lack of water has made a decrease in Castilla y León in general.
In Toro the reduction of the production has been about 20% while in Ribera del Duero a little more, as a result of frost and hail, mainly located in Piñel.
The oldest vineyards from Toro, where the grapes for the Aponte wines come from, have better withstood the inclemency of the weather, since they have very deep roots capable of captur water from the subsoil and to self-regulate.
In the 2017 harvest, the saying "less quantity, more quality" will be fulfilled, since the grapes that entered the cellars were in an excellent sanitary state. At this time, when the wines are in the process of malolactic fermentation, it’s being revealed what we expected before harvest: Very aromatic wines with great aging potential.
The grapes had high concentration of polyphenolic compounds, responsible for the color and aromas of the wines, and with an exceptional alcoholic maturation (accumulation of sugars).
Finally, the winemaker Juan Martín-Hinojal, has bet to take full advantage of the grapes with long macerations and foresees that the aging time in barrels will be higher this year.
In Bodegas Nexus & Frontaura, apart from the stainless steel tanks and oak barrels, we also use amphoras and concrete tanks for the fermentation of some of our wines. These materials, as being more porous, help to get fresher and friendly wines.
The 2017 vintage at Bodegas Nexus & Frontaura will be a great vintage, with wines in which predominates the variety aromas and will be capable of overcome the passage of time, gaining in elegance.
