The vintage in Bodegas Nexus, Pesquera de Duero, begins a little later than in Toro. Here the damage caused by the frosts of late April and early May, as well as the fall hail in summer will cause a 50% decrease of the production.
The damage has been greater in the vineyards located in Piñel, while those of Pesquera have had more luck. This year all the grapes will be picked by hand to make a first selection in the vineyard, where the bunches that have been saved present an impeccable sanitary condition. In about five days all the grapes will be inside the cellar.
In Ribera del Duero is also felt the change that is experiencing the climate in recent years and in the winery it have already taken steps to get fresher, well-balanced and fruity wines. For the Nexus Crianza wine, for example, is used grapes from an plot in property, Pisa Rosas, planted at 1000 meters altitude; and have begun to work with clones that bring more foliage to the plant.
As for the elaboration, Juan Martín-Hinojal bet for shorter macerations, little extraction and pumping over less the wine.
The 2017 harvest will not be remembered as an easy vintage, time has not helped, but at Bodegas Nexus & Frontaura we have the best human team to continue offering the highest quality in our wines.
